Thyra Winther’s seventeen, the Snow Queen, and immortal, but if she can’t reassemble a shattered enchanted mirror by her eighteenth birthday she’s doomed to spend eternity as a wraith.Armed with magic granted by a ruthless wizard, Thyra schemes to survive with her mind and body intact. Unencumbered by kindness, she kidnaps local boy Kai Thorsen, whose mathematical skills rival her own. Two logical minds, Thyra calculates, are better than one. With time rapidly melting away she needs all the help she can steal.A cruel lie ensnares Kai in her plan, but three missing mirror shards and Kai’s childhood friend, Gerda, present more formidable obstacles. Thyra’s willing to do anything – venture into uncharted lands, outwit sorcerers, or battle enchanted beasts — to reconstruct the mirror, yet her most dangerous adversary lies within her breast. Touched by the warmth of a wolf pup’s devotion and the fire of a young man’s desire, the thawing of Thyra’s frozen heart could be her ultimate undoing.CROWN OF ICE is a YA Fantasy that reinvents Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen” from the perspective of a young woman who discovers that the greatest threat to her survival may be her own humanity.
This book was fantastic, and so different from anything that I have ever read. I loved every single page of this book, and I very much look forward to whatever comes next from this amazing author!
I will admit that Thyra Winter, The Snow Queen, is not at all easy to like in the beginning, and definitely hard to relate to. She is emotionless, and willing to do ruthless things to get what she wants. This includes horrible behavior towards animals, which is usually something that will make me put a book down and never look back. I am glad that I felt obligated to continue this book because of the tour, because I was able to see The Snow Queen melt, and fall in love with a wonderful story.
After her parents were killed in a horrible storm when she was a child, Thyra was adopted by a woman in town and treated no better than the pigs in the sty. She was then taken by her master, Mael Voss and imbued with the magic of the snow queen in order to restore a magic mirror. Other snow queens had tried before her, and each one is now a wraith because of their failure. Thyra is determined to beat that fate, at whatever cost.
Enter Kai Thorsen. He is a local village boy who is anything but common. He is incredibly smart and rivals Thyra in his mathematics skills. Thyra believes that he is the answer to helping her solve the mirror puzzle, so she decides she will bring him to her, whatever it takes. It won't be easy. Kai's family is close, and his best friend Gerda has a tendency to get in the way.
I don't want to give away any more of the story, but I will say this.... READ THIS BOOK! It is a fast-paced, adventurous story. There are talking animals, Luki the wolf who plays a huge part of the story. Childhood love, unrequited. An evil, nasty mage who has no qualms about harming anything that stands in his way, and does his best to prove that goodness always ends up losing. And a melting Snow Queen who has to decide in the end what matters most in the world. A romance that doesn't start out that way. I had a blast reading this book, and I hope that y'all will give it a chance, too!
