Cassidy Haines remembers her first kiss vividly. It was on the old covered bridge the summer before her freshman year with her boyfriend of three years, Ethan Keys. But her last kiss--the one she shared with someone at her seventeenth birthday party the night she died--is a blur. Cassidy is trapped in the living world, not only mourning the loss of her human body, but left with the grim suspicion that her untimely death wasn't a suicide as everyone assumes. She can't remember anything from the weeks leading up to her birthday and she's worried that she may have betrayed her boyfriend.

If Cassidy is to uncover the truth about that fateful night and make amends with the only boy she'll ever love, she must face her past and all the decisions she made--good and bad--that led to her last kiss.

Bethany Neal's suspenseful debut novel is about the power of first love and the haunting lies that threaten to tear it apart.

My Last Kiss is told from the point of Cassidy, our dead heroine. The book flips back and forth between a jumbled past and the present as ghost Cassidy tries desperately to figure out how she died. She knows she didn't commit suicide like everyone seems to believe. Nobody can see her except her boyfriend, Ethan.

This book is a complete mystery as Cassidy is pulled into reliving certain moments of the time leading up to her death, but they're incomplete and they end abruptly before she gets the answers that she so desperately seeks. It was fun reliving the tidbits and trying to piece together what had happened to her. There are a lot of characters and a lot of suspects along the way, but I had no problem following the plot twists. I can honestly say that despite my attempts to figure everything out before the end, I had had no idea.

One drawback was that the end, and all the loose ends coming together, was kind of fast. It was like an information overload all at once. I would have liked a more drawn out conclusion. My other complaint was that I have no idea why Ethan was the only one to see her. I don't know if I missed something or what. But, it wasn't too distracting from the story. Just the completionist in me having to know and understand every tiny detail.

I definitely recommend this book if you can stick with the crazy plot twists. You'll get all your answers. It just takes some time.

Below Bethany has shared a story about how My Last Kiss came to be!  I love when authors are inspired by music and that novels can reveal themselves through songs.  Check out the story below:

A very wise fictional character once said, “Who knows where thoughts come from? They just appear.” (Lucas, Empire Records, 1995. If you haven’t experienced this movie, you must go now—finish reading this post then go watch it!) That may be true, but I know exactly where I got the idea for my debut novel My Last Kiss.

I was in the middle of the submission process for my first (unpublished) novel and developing three or four different new ideas for my next book to distract myself from the anguish of waiting to hear back from editors, but none of the ideas were quite gelling. So, I headed into the holiday season that year feeling a little stressed and a lot preoccupied. Music has always been my inspiration and my escape. So while driving to visit family for Thanksgiving weekend I had my tunes cranked and my mind on autopilot. One CD ended, so I popped in Fantasies by one of my all-time favorite bands, Metric.

Now, I’d heard the first track on that album maybe a hundred times before that moment, but this time I was listening to it in writer mode. The whole trip I’d been brainstorming ideas and thinking of how I could make them more “high concept”, which in publishing speak is code for easier to sell. I’d been tossing around the idea of a pair of first-lovers torn apart by a tragic accident that took one of their lives. I was locked in on the idea of love transcending death, but the story was still missing a hook. That element that makes it impossible for you to put the book down once you’ve read about it on the back cover.

The song starts out with a peppered bass line and sets the mood of someone in over her head. Totally fit the bill for my situation, right? So my ears perked up. Then the chorus rolled in with ‘Help, I’m alive/My heart keeps beating like a hammer’ and something clicked into place. I started thinking, what if you were alive and you weren’t supposed to be? What if you died in a way that was so viscerally wrong that you were given a second chance to make it right? But here’s the kicker, that hook: you don’t remember any of it.

I immediately located a napkin (that I still have) in my car’s glove box and began chicken-scratching down ideas while I drove with my knee. It’s important to note that I do not under any circumstances condone writing while driving, but this particular idea hit me hard and I couldn’t write fast enough to keep up with it. So hard, in fact, that I spend the entirety of my four day visit with my head stuck in my laptop.

There were times in the writing process that I doubted whether the story made any sense because the truth about Cassidy’s death unfolds in a sequence of out of order flashbacks, but I never doubted the strength of the concept. And I always had that song to re-inspire me whenever doubt tried to beat me down. I owe a lot to all the musicians (featured on the My Last Kiss playlist) that inspire me with their poetic lyrics while I was writing this novel, especially Metric who unwittingly helped me land my first book deal with their song ‘Help, I'm Alive’. I hope they don’t mind seeing their name in my acknowledgements…and on a few other pages of My Last Kiss.
