Maisie Danger Brown just wanted to get away from home for a bit, see something new. She never intended to fall in love. And she never imagined stumbling into a frightening plot that kills her friends and just might kill her, too. A plot that is already changing life on Earth as we know it. There's no going back. She is the only thing standing between danger and annihilation.

From NY Times bestselling author Shannon Hale comes a novel that asks, How far would you go to save the ones you love? And how far would you go to save everyone else?

This book is hard to write a review about- I mean this is Shannon Hale.  She has written so many of my favorite books. I had HUGE expectations for this book.  And while I enjoyed the book, and I am glad I read it, it was not my favorite.

I think the real problem with this book was that it was too long. It felt like an entire series stuffed into one book.  Now, usually I am a big fan of long books.  In this case, though, it really was dragging.  There were numerous places that I thought could have been appropriate endings for the book.  And while we got an entire story in one book, I didn't really get to know the side characters as much as I wanted to- I didn't find the romance as believable and I didn't care as much as I should have when the side characters died.

I am not sure if this was meant to be a series or a standalone, but it was entirely too long to be a series starter, in my mind.  The action was good, the fighting and danger were a ton of fun to read, but at times the book felt like a task.  There were too many lulls in the book for me to really devour it.

As I said, this was a good book- the action was great and I loved reading about diverse characters, but this was not my favorite of Hale's.

  1. Coranne, I started Dangerous about a month ago and still haven't finished it. You said perfectly what I had been feeling about the book. Glad to know that I am not the only one. I was thinking I was crazy because this is Shannon Hale we're talking about here. Thanks for your review!

  3. I haven't really seen a completely positive review for this yet. I have a copy and I've been meaning to read it, but like you, I have high expectations for Shannon and I know this will probably disappoint me. Maybe if I go in with low expectations???

  4. This book wasn't my favorite either. I was really excited to read it and I'm a bit disappointed. There were some great moments but a lot of parts fell flat for me.
