The First Phone Call from Heaven tells the story of a small town on Lake Michigan that gets worldwide attention when its citizens start receiving phone calls from the afterlife. Is it the greatest miracle ever or a massive hoax? Sully Harding, a grief-stricken single father, is determined to find out. An allegory about the power of belief--and a page-turner that will touch your soul--Albom's masterful storytelling has never been so moving and unexpected.

Alright, I am going to be honest.  I have had a love/ hate relationship with Mitch Albom's books.  I was intrigued by the idea of the premise.  Picking up the phone and talking to someone who is supposed to be dead?  That sounds both thrilling and terrifying.

Like the author's other books, The First Phone Call from Heaven is a breeze of a read.  Although the topics are tough, the book is short and written in a simple, straight forward style.  The author seems to forgo any flowery language and speak in a way that reminds me of having a chat with a friend.  I really do enjoy his style of writing.

The main narrator of the story is a character named Sully, who approaches the entire notion of being called from heaven with mild disgust.  Sully's pain is fresh and he has no interest in the mumbo jumbo that has jumped from one congregation to becoming a national sensation.  I will say, that since the author's books are so short, we aren't really given much of a chance to get to know the characters as well as in other novels.  This doesn't take away from the book at all, but may be something that readers find odd from other books.

The First Phone Call From Heaven is a short, engaging book that speaks to whom we should be putting our hope in.  It is an excellent release for this time of year- this would make a perfect Christmas gift for readers and non-readers alike.  I highly recommend this book and will be sharing it with friends.
