Summary from Goodreads:

Kate’s life is far from normal. She can see auras, her boyfriend is immortal, and her powers make her a target. But now that the Demon Lord is hunting her, things are about to go from dangerous to truly deadly. Packed with action, mind-blowing plot twists, and characters you can’t get enough of, this is a fast-paced, heart-pounding read from cover to cover.

My thoughts....

Demons is the second book in the Seers trilogy, however, it stands very well on its own.  I didn't read the first book, however, enough backstory is given that the reader is pretty clear on what happened to Kate in the previous book. Very rarely did I find myself confused or wondering who a character was or which side they were on -- and the times that I was confused could mostly be chalked up to me reading too fast.

I enjoyed this book. Kate is an interesting, sympathetic character.  She is adjusting to life after experiencing great tragedy in the first book -- a tragedy that came with the awakening of Kate's abilities to see auras, which tell her people's moods and feelings, as well as if the person is a Demon, Guardian, or just another human.  Despite this, she tries to go about her life as normal -- hanging out with her younger sisters, going to school, getting to know her (hot, immortal, Guardian) boyfriend Patrick -- but there's nothing normal about Kate, and trouble follows her, big time.

I will say that having not read the first one, I was able to use my imagination and pretend that Patrick and Kate didn't instantly fall in love, even though it seems like that's what happened.  I have a lot of issues with insta-love, and also with young teenagers who are immediately all ~I looove you~ after only knowing each other a short time.  (I also have a lot to say in general, like, let's talk about the power imbalance inherent in a teenage girl dating someone who is technically hundreds of years old, but that's a whole other post, for a whole other blog.)

I liked the fact that Kate was a very capable character.  She didn't let herself dwell or wallow whenever things got tough.  She came up with plans and executed them -- even if the plans maybe weren't exactly the best ideas.  She tries to make the right decisions, and when she's done something that's hurt someone else, she owns up to it and tries to fix it.   While some of the plot twists were predictable, there are also a lot of surprises, including one or two that had me going /wait, no way/!  This book also left me wanting to know more about the demons, especially the Demon Lord and his most trusted servant, Far Darrig.  (Leave it to me to be drawn to the bad guys!)  I'm sure we haven't seen the last of them.

And, hey, want to talk about cliffhangers?  Well, Heather Frost knocks it out of the park on this one.  The last few pages definitely made me want to read the next book!

This book is a very clean read, aside from some scenes of violence.  There's no cursing and while Patrick and Kate are definitely in ~love~ there isn't anything beyond kissing.  Don't let the fact that it's a book in the middle of a series stop you from picking this one up, either.

Intrigued by what you read?  Want a chance to win the book?  Heather and her publisher are graciously offering a chance to win a hardback copy of Demons (US only, sorry).  Check out the Rafflecopter giveaway below for your chance to win!  This giveaway ends September 14th.
