Summary taken from Goodreads:

Dez is a good girl who does as she’s told and tries not to be noticed.
Then she rescues a boy from a cage, and he tells her secrets about herself.
Now inside her burns a darkness that will transform her.

Everything is about to change -- and neither Caleb, nor the Otherkin, nor those who hunt them are prepared for what Dez will unleash.

The Cover:  The cover of this book was what originally drew me in.  I loved that the cover model looked a bit exotic and that she obviously was able to shift into a tiger- not a werewolf or a vampire.  I loved how vibrant the colors were on the cover and how different it seemed from other covers out there.  And can I say that she kinda looks Russian (if you know what I mean?)  - that is pretty awesome to me!

The Characters: The names in this book were a little strange, and they got some getting used to. The main character, Dez, also took a bit of time to get used to.  It wasn't that she was flat or even over done in the personality department- I honestly couldn't get a read on what her personality was until about a third of the way into the book.  I enjoyed Dez and I thought she made a great heroine- and I love that she had a spinal disorder and was still the heroine.  Caleb was a bit bland when it comes to heroes.  He started out with a strong personality, but then seemed to fade into the background when the focus of the narrative was on Dez.

The Story:  I really enjoyed this story.  It had qualities that are common in YA lit- teen girl finds herself suddenly with powers and has to go away to a special school, etc.  However, it didn't feel every other teen book I have read.  It was engaging, exciting, and towards the end a little relentless with the action scenes.  Fans of paranormal YA lit will be drawn in by the shape-shifting and special powers and will stay for the mystery of Dez's past and the powerful action scenes.
