Blogoversary Day 3: What I have learned +Giveaway

Thanks for coming back to Short and Sweet Reviews for Day 3 of our Blogaversary celebration!

As I was trying to think up what do do for my third day... my brain hit a total blank.... I literally just sat and:

I was thinking about doing a post on what I have learned as a blogger... I was going to do a rant on things that frustrate me as a blogger... I was going to talk about some of my favorite books... and then I realized- those are not "celebration" types of post.  So lets just get on to the giveaway shall we?

Today since I am feeling silly I am going to giveaway a mystery package with 2 books in it!  I'm not telling you what books I'm including- and who knows maybe there will be some other fun stuff thrown in too- since I am feeling super silly!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Feeling sad because you aren't in the US or CA and you want to enter a giveaway?  Make sure to check back tomorrow- because tomorrow's giveaway is INTERNATIONAL!  And while you wait, have you filled out the reader survey and entered for a book pick from the Book Depository?  That one is INTERNATIONAL too!

Also, since I want to get to know you- make sure you ask me questions below- I will answer and it will count as an entry!

  1. Happy Blogoversary! I tried to ask my question in the Raffelcopter, but the "blank" wasn't there so I thought I ask here: Blogging is a lot of work, why do you do it?

    1. Thank you! You are absolutely right to put it here :)

Blogging is alot of work- you are right. I never expected to be working as much as a part time job! I do it because I love books! I do it because I want to be part of a community that is as book-obsessed as I am, and I do it because I want something of my own outside of being a mom :)

    1. The first time someone commented one of my reviews- it was so wonderful to know I wasn't just writing to myself. My second favorite is probably when I started up the Best Book Ever Feature :)

  3. Which book has been your least favorite that you've reviewed so far?

    1. Oh man, that is a hard one. Usually when I dislike a book that much- I will only review it on Goodreads and not on my blog (or I don't finish it). I will keep thinking about this one :)

  6. What made you decide to do a blog about books?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I had originally started when I was reviewing for book sneeze. I had a blog over on Live Journal (it was a mix of personal blogging and book blogging. ) I decided it was time to move into a new home at Blogger for only my books! And I started blogging about my library books, and I was hooked!

  7. How do you prevent (or deal with) "Blogger Burnout"?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's a great question! I tend to be a perfectionist and walk a fine line between being fine blogging and having a panic attack- mix that in with an inability to say no... and well... you get burnout! If I am feeling burnt out, I take a few days off. To be honest, I try very hard to keep myself in check and know that this is still a hobby- I am not getting paid. I typically read a book every day (in the evenings)- so if I read too many duds in a row- I will switch to a new genre, or pick a book that isn't for review (that I bought) :)

  8. How do you deal with writing a bad review?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am honest, but not mean. I keep the author completely out of it- I am writing about the book not the author. I try to say one nice thing for the book for every negative. If the book isn't out yet (I got an Advanced Copy), I usually wait until AFTER the book is released to post my review. If I do it before, I feel like my review is being used as publicity and that isn't fair to the pub. or the author. I still post my review- but after it is published.

  12. Do you always finish your books you are reviewing? Sometimes when I know things are about to get really bad (or sad) I just shut the book and walk away. Do you ever do that as a reviewer, or do you just plow through it??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sometimes both- sometimes I stop and put them away (the last one was Lies Beneath), but other times (like if I specifically requested it and got a hard copy) I will try to plow through. If I can't finish it- I try to give it to someone else to review on my site.

  20. Alright, here is my ?. I just started a blog and I am trying to figure out all of the gadgets and widgets and whodunits and everything before I start trying to get the word out there. Any advice on starting a blog, maintaining it, or just any advice in general for this 30 year old newbie?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Build up your reviews- library books, books you read 10 years ago, anything goes! Use Twitter- it is a great promotional tool and a way to get to know other bloggers. Make sure you have blog buttons, buttons to connect your readers to your twitter, goodreads, facebook, etc.

Maintaining it? Take advantage of scheduling posts- that way if you are ahead you won't get stressed out if you get sick or need a few days off :) Good luck and if you ever need help- I am here!

  39. How do you schedule your time so that you are able to keep up with your normal life and family obligations, but still have time for reading, blogging and answering follower questions without going crazy?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Haven't you noticed? I AM crazy, haha! I try to schedule posts ahead by at least a week to give me wiggle room. Right now I have posts up to next Monday scheduled and ready to post. I have the 'skeleton" posts ready in draft form for most of April. It really does reduce time spent writing. I pretty much only work on blogging stuff when my son is sleeping- and that is my only night to read too, so i just try to juggle them both :)

    1. Either... to be honest- I mainly read YA fiction or Christian fiction, so unless it really interests me- I don't typically read reviews outside of that... but I appreciate any blogger who writes about what they love instead of what they THINK they should be writing about :) But I love your site Melissa!

  49. Can you please help me with blog buttons for a blogger blog? I try to grab peoples buttons to put on my blog but I cannot figure out how to put them up and make them clickable. Driving me crazier!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sure thing! Are they like my blog buttons- where they have an html code under the picture? If so, then copy the html (make sure you get it all) and then go to your blog. As long as you are logged into blogger- click "Design" at the top right of the page (if not- sign in and then click Design). On the left side it will give you a menu- click "Layout". It will then show you a skeleton of what your blog looks like. It looks like you have sidebars on both sides of your blog- so it doesn't matter which side you pick. Click "Add a Gadget" and then it will pop up a box. Scroll until you find "Add HTML"- click that. Then paste the html code and save! If you don't like where it is- you can always click and drag to a new place on the "Layout page"

If there is no html code- you will need to right click the picture and click view image. Then copy the URL that comes up. In a NEW TAB. Go to your blog and do the steps above until you get to the layout page. Click "Add a Gadget" and then instead of "Add HTML" find "Add Picture". It will give you the option of putting in a URL of where you found the picture. Paste the link you copied. Then go back to the other blog (that you are trying to link to) and get the link to their actual blog- on the "Add a Picture" page it will ask if you want to add a link to the picture. Paste that link and hit save!

I hope this helps- if not let me know and we can chat more!
